What it is

Phage Defense combines two things in one delayed-release capsule: a seven-strain probiotic blend at 5 billion CFU (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Streptococcus thermophilus, Bifidobacterium breve) and 15 mg of PrePhage, a blend of four bacteriophages (LH01, LL5, T4D, LL12). Bacteriophages are naturally occurring viruses that act on specific bacteria and not on human cells; the four here are each specific to strains of Escherichia coli, and they serve as a prebiotic that is not a fiber and does not ferment. The delayed-release capsule of HPMC and pectin is designed to carry both past stomach acid. The formula contains no gluten, dairy, soy or GMOs.

Who it's for

This formula supports a balanced gut microbiome, the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, normal digestion and stool consistency, and the gut's immune function. It suits an adult or older child who is avoiding dairy-based probiotics and does well with a once-daily capsule, and anyone who has not tolerated fiber prebiotics. The label gives no children's dose; ask your practitioner about use for children.

Format and how to take

Delayed-release vegetarian capsules. Take one capsule per day with a meal, or as directed by your health-care practitioner. Refrigeration is recommended to hold potency and shelf life; organism potency declines slowly, and faster with heat, humidity or direct sunlight. Viable organisms are counted at the time of manufacture. Each bottle holds 60 capsules.

Per 1 capsule: Proprietary Probiotic Blend 295 mg (5 billion CFU) of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Streptococcus thermophilus and Bifidobacterium breve; PrePhage Bacteriophage Prebiotic Blend 15 mg of LH01-Myoviridae, LL5-Siphoviridae, T4D-Myoviridae and LL12-Myoviridae. Daily Value not established. Other ingredients: delayed release capsule (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose [HPMC], pectin, water), medium chain triglycerides. Does not contain gluten, dairy, soy or GMOs.
