What it is

GABA Cofactors Improved is an amino acid, mineral and herbal formula built around what the body uses to make and respond to GABA, its main calming neurotransmitter. Vitamin B6 comes as pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, the active coenzyme in the step that turns glutamate into GABA, alongside zinc glycinate, magnesium succinate and manganese succinate. L-taurine and L-theanine are the calming amino acids. Valerian root and passionflower extracts are standardized, to 0.8% valerenic acids and 3.5% flavonoids. Lithium orotate, a trace mineral form, completes the blend. This capsule formula is a different product from the GABA coFactors spray.

Who it's for

The formula supports a calm, settled nervous system, a normal response to everyday stress and the wind-down that comes before sleep. It is for an adult, or a child under a practitioner's guidance, who wants nutritional support for daytime calm and focus and easier settling at night, and who can take a small vegetarian capsule three times a day. Because it contains lithium orotate and more than a full day's manganese, it belongs in a plan a practitioner is following rather than in casual use.

Format and how to take

Vegetarian capsules (hypromellose), 90 per bottle, one capsule per serving. The label's suggested use: take 1 capsule 3 times a day, or as directed by your healthcare professional. The label gives no children's dose and asks you to consult your healthcare professional for any use by minors, so ask your practitioner about use for children.

• Passionflower extract (Passiflora incarnata, flower; standardized to 3.5% flavonoids) 100 mg
• L-Theanine 15 mg
• Lithium (as lithium orotate) 10 mg

Precautions

At three capsules a day the daily total is three times the per-capsule lithium and manganese listed above, so tell your practitioner about this product if you take any medication or other supplements. Valerian and passionflower are traditionally used for relaxation; combine them with other calming products only on your practitioner's advice.
